La Brea Tar Pits
Note: The Tar Pits close July 7, 2026 for a 2 year remodel.
The La Brea Tar Pits and Museum is a popular day trip for our camp guests. The Rancho La Brea site is the largest collection of late Pleistocene asphaltic fossils in the world. That means it is the only Ice Age fossil site in the world and it’s being actively excavated in the middle of Los Angeles. It’s a unique museum and well worth a visit before they close for renovations.
The tar pits offer free admission for most students and residents of Los Angeles. For a complete list of ticket options check their website.
